Trade Show Press Release

Opening May 7th, from 6-9 p.m., Trade Show draws on the practices of soon-to-be Kansas City Art Institute Grads Sara Cramer, John Hilger, Aly Parrott and Sean Starowitz.

The artists are working collectively to create a space that affords awareness of the many uses of used and discarded materials. The gallery will be a place, not only to view the objects the artists have made, but one in which to learn new ways of looking at consuming, functionality, craft, and monetary exchange.

Over the three weeks occupying the gallery, the collaborators will facilitate alternate systems of exchange through barter. Objects made from repurposed materials will be offered for appraisal by visitors who will then determine a comparable trade. Dialogue between the artist and the audience is integral, and the hope is that the trade process will provide an item for the visitor that will prove meaningful and functional in their everyday lives. The artists, while not looking for any specific item or service from traders, are seeking an active kind of engagement, in which the person or group they are trading with will attempt to quantify the value of what is being offered to them. This bartering process allows an interaction not facilitated by monetary systems in which value is predetermined by producers.

The Gallery will be open for public engagement the first three Fridays in May.
